Message of the H.O.D

MSW programme of Sambalpur University aims at building up a team of students who are ready to shoulder up responsibility in the field of social work. The programme remains alert to the process of restructuring and change in the context of changing times and emerging challenges. The MSW programme offers specialization in Community Development/Human Resource Development(Rural & Urban)/Human resource Development). The thrust area of the Department is Rural community Development, Resettlement and Rehabilitation(R&R), Corporate Social Responsibility, social exclusion/inclusion and children & childhood. Students are given with varieties of field exposure through Observation Visits, Concurrent fieldwork, Industrial tours, Intensive camp-based fieldwork, Block placements, Summer internships and through extension activities. The Programme has adopted Nua Tihura GP of Maneswar block of Sambalpur district for its extension work.

Students' Activities

•  Summer Internship: Students did summer internship under DRDA, Sambalpur and DRDA, Malkangiri and some did their internship in lead NGOs and some students worked as a Professional Resource Person (PRP) on Odisha Livelihood Mission (OLM) Project

•  Field Exposure: Students did fieldwork with the displaced people of Hirakud Dam Project in NuaTihora G.P of Sambalpur district, Odisha

•  Street Play: Students staged a number of street plays on different social issues both in rural and urban pockets of Odisha

•  Rural Exposure: Students were given rural exposure in remote areas of Sambalpur district of Odisha

•  Cultural Programme: Students participated in different cultural programmes organized by the University and own medals and Prizes •

•  Blood Donation Camp: Students successfully organized a Blood Donation Campaign in Sambalpur University by local fund

•  Workshop: Students successfully organized two Workshops in Sambalpur University by raising local fund

•  Environment Protection: Students actively worked 20 days for Polythene Free Campus at Sambalpur University and distributed dustbin to all hostel by local fund

•  National Seminar: Eleven students participated in the National Seminar on Rethinking Social Change & Role of Professional Social Workers: Recent Trends and Emerging Prospective in the Indian context organized by Vivekananda Institute of Social Work and Social Sciences (VISWASS), Bhubaneswar, Odisha on February 9, 2014

Studies  Abroad

• Mr. Ajit Lakra and Ms. Jayanti Majhi have been to Aarhus University, Denmark and Warsaw University, Poland (our partner European Universities) respectively to pursue their 3rd and 4th semesters through Erasmus Mundus Action Plan-1 under “IBIES- Go Abroad”.

•  Mr. Loknath Sahoo and Mr. Kuleswar Majhi will go to Romania for a duration of one year in June, 2014 as Volunteers for ‘Youth in Action Programme,’ European Union

About the Self-financing Course

Sambalpur University launched MSW course from the academic session 2007-08. Besides the three regular faculties, the course is being handled by a group of experienced faculty from the Post-Graduate Departments of Anthropology, Sociology, Economics, Political Science and Public Administration, Home Science, English, Business Administration and Law. The Department of Anthropology, Sambalpur University coordinates this self-financing course. Any graduate securing 45% marks is eligible for taking admission into this self-financing course. The selection is made through a written test followed by group discussion and personal interview. There are 32 seats for regular and 6 seats for the sponsored candidates. The passed out students of this self-financing course are very well placed. Besides teaching the course curriculum, the course gives due emphasis on capacity building and soft skills development.

Objectives of the MSW programme

•  Motivate the young minds to develop a concern for various socio-economic issues of Western Odisha and to provide them necessary social work skills to deal with those issues effectively

•  Improve the quality of life of the downtrodden or marginalized people of Odisha in general and Western Odisha in particular

•  To prepare students for effective participation in the CSR activities in the industrial and peripheral areas and to develop their skills to deal with issues of Displacement, Rehabilitation and Resettlement

•  To impart social work knowledge to the young aspirants oriented towards effective social changes
